Want to learn more about the Military Service Academies and how to obtain a recommendation? U.S. SENATOR LINDSEY GRAHAM and U.S. SENATOR TIM SCOTT will host a Military Academy Day in Columbia on Saturday April 18th from9am-1pm. The attached event flyer includes registration information.

The U.S. military service academies are tuition-free, four-year degree-granting institutions operated by the military departments. The academies are a major officer commissioning source. The military service academies under the Department of Defense (DOD) include the

  • U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, New York, under the Department of the Army;
  • U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, Maryland, under the Department of the Navy (Navy and Marine Corps); and
  • U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, Colorado, under the Department of the Air Force (Air Force and Space Force).

There are two other federal service academies, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, in New London, Connecticut, under the Department of Homeland Security; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York, under the Department of Transportation. While graduates of these service academies may also receive an officer commission upon graduation, they differ from the military service academies in many respects (e.g., statutory authorities, application and acceptance processes). Each of the military service academies has their own statutory authorities under Title 10, United States Code.
Admissions
Admission to the service academies is competitive. To be appointed to a service academy, an applicant must meet certain eligibility requirements and be nominated by Members of Congress or other authorized individuals (See CRS Report RL33213, ). Admissions offices generally assess candidates for admission in three areas: academics, physical aptitude, and leadership potential. A candidate must also meet medical standards for service. To matriculate, a nominated applicant must be a U.S. citizen, between 17 and 23 years old, unmarried, without a legal obligation to support any dependents, and not pregnant.

Johnston Elementary School is proud to offer a $500.00 scholarship in memory of some of our former Johnston Bears. The scholarship is being offered to any prior JES student that is a graduating senior at Strom Thurmond High School with the desire to further their education. We are calling the scholarship the “JES ACE Scholarship.”  These letters, A-C-E, stand for three former students that were once a part of the JES family, and have since passed away.  It is our hope that the recipient will go forth and demonstrate the foundational leadership qualities  established at Johnston Elementary School.

Please write an essay of 250-500 words describing either a life-changing event or a person that has had a significant impact on your life.  When writing your essay, consider the following questions:

  • Who or what has changed your life?
  • In what way has your life changed because of this experience or person?
  •  How have you changed?
  • What positive changes have come about because of this experience or person?
  • How has this made you see things differently?
  • How have you brought about change in others because of it?

***Not all of these questions need to be addressed.  These are simply guiding questions for you to consider as you complete the essay.

Greetings from the University of North Georgia!

The Army ROTC scholarship application is open!  We highly encourage all seniors to start the application immediately so that there is maximum time to help them make their applications as competitive as possible.  There will be three national boards – October 25, January 26, and March 26 for students to start college in Fall of 2026.

At the University of North Georgia, one of only six Senior Military Colleges in the nation, we’re looking for high school seniors who want to serve our nation as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. The Army ROTC Scholarship pays for room and board (up to $12,000 per year) or 100% of tuition and fees + $420/month stipend + $1,200/yr book allowance. Click here for eligibility criteria, benefits, and how to apply.

We are the best value university of the nation’s six Senior Military Colleges. Our cost for tuition, fees, room, meals, books, and uniforms is about $23,800 for the first year. The following three years are each $2,800 less as there is no uniform fee in subsequent years. Last year, more than 60 high school seniors were awarded three and four-year Army ROTC scholarships to enroll in the Corps of Cadets at UNG.

Seniors! We are looking for students planning to major in a STEM career. This is a great opportunity. See your counselor or Mrs. Johnson in the career center for information and assistance.

At Boeing, we’ve invested over $125 million in education and charitable initiatives since 2010 to inspire and prepare students for STEM careers. Just as athletes celebrate college signing days, we believe STEM students should receive the same recognition.
The 10th annual SC STEM Signing Day is that opportunity. Boeing, BMW, Michelin, Nucor, SC Future Makers, and the SC Manufacturers and Commerce will honor two students from each South Carolina county who plan to pursue a STEM career. Like athletic signing days, students will sign a letter of intent to attend a two- or four-year STEM program after high school.

Selected students will be recognized on April 29, 2026, at the USC Alumni Center and the South Carolina State House alongside elected officials, business leaders, and community supporters.

How to Apply:

Any South Carolina high school senior graduating in 2026 can apply. To do so, students must create an account on Tallo, an online platform connecting students with opportunities. After creating an account, they can complete the short application by  March 13, 2026.

This year’s essay prompt encourages students to write about an African American from South Carolina who has positively impacted their educational journey.

Essays should highlight how this individual’s actions relate to one or more of the six key purposes outlined in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution: to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, or secure the blessings of liberty.

Students can enroll in out-of-state institutions and pay the institution’s in-state tuition rates for more than 2,200 undergraduate and graduate programs. The ACM is not competitive, or merit based, but applicants must meet state residency and college admission requirements.
