How many of us remember that day when our high school class rings were delivered and we showed them off to everyone we knew?  How we admired its sparkling beauty and our customized features? How we adjusted to the new weight of it on your hand?  To this day, it is still just as magical to the juniors at Strom Thurmond High School as it was to last year’s students and to those receiving them fifty years ago or more.

This year’s class is no different.  On November 28, 2018 at 7 p.m., sixty-six juniors and their parents gathered in the school’s cafetorium for Class of 2020 Ring Ceremony.  Ring Committee member, Anthony Scott, welcomed everyone to the event which was followed by each student being presented their ring by their parent(s). AMya Watson gave the symbolism of the ring, which is two-fold. Some see it as symbol of a continuous life-long learning process. Others see it as the bond that keeps the class together for eternity, no matter where life leads them. Guided by Sanaiya Watkins, the entire STHS Class of 2020 joined in the turning of the ring, a long-standing tradition. On the count of three, students turned the rings in unison from left to right.  Sanaiya reminded her class that the next time this class does something together, it will be at graduation, when their tassels are moved from one side of the mortar board to the other.

After the singing of the Alma Mater, closing remarks were made by the Junior Class Ring Committee sponsor, Jennifer Lanham, and the poignant ceremony was wrapped up by 8 p.m. Congratulations, Class of 2020!
