Be the Change: A Black History Month Student Seminar

To celebrate Black History Month, students at Strom Thurmond High School and Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center participated in a three-part seminar.  They discussed quotes spoken by past and present influential African American leaders: Harriet Tubman, Barack Obama, Shirley Chisholm, and Kamala Harris. They related how each quote’s message related to themselves, to our community, and to our society.  The conversations were transparent and unrehearsed.  One student stated, “These are the open discussions that we need to have in order to bring change to our community.”  Another student commented that the seminar was therapeutic.  At the end of the seminar, the students reached the following consensus: To bring about change in our community, we must listen to one another even when we don’t agree! We must be the change!
