STHS students use virtual reality to learn about new skills needed in SC

Be Pro Be Proud Mobile Workshop at STHS

Students at STHS were given a sneak preview into possible futures last week by exploring job opportunities that are available in South Carolina. Our state is rapidly facing an employment challenge with 43% of our workforce retiring. The good news is there will be plenty of jobs, but quite a large skills gap. In other words, employers are looking for a certain skill set, but the workers lack those skills. To fill this gap, the Be Pro Be Proud SC initiative is working to close that gap, bringing a new generation of pride, progress and professionals to the state’s workforce.

Housed in an impressive 18-wheeler with push-outs, this mobile unit tours schools all over South Carolina. This customized trailer is chock full of information and hands on skill challenges using virtual reality headsets and Occulus touch controllers. Interactive simulator technology allows students to virtually experience driving an 18-wheeler, operating a forklift, carpentry, welding, diesel technology, and heavy equipment operating. This Workforce Workshop gives students exposure to jobs they did not realize were available. Using a touch screen monitor, students can find training (schools) in South Carolina that offer instruction in various skills as well as what job pays in our state and where those jobs are located.

Hosted by Mack Hite, Director of Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center, the initiative hopes to encourage students to stay in school, stay clear of drugs, get certified and find a profitable career in South Carolina.
