Students working a crime scene,

The evidence was everywhere:  the actual crime scene, murder weapons, news articles, eyewitness statements, medical examiner reports, the victim’s reputation, and news articles.  The victim was a well know leader and his death, a mystery.  However, the students in Ms. Ashley Galloway and Mrs. Anne Widell’s English II classes are yearning to solve this morbid case.

Each year as part of the English II curriculum the Shakespearean play, “Julius Caesar,” carefully examined.  Instead of just reading the material and echoing facts on an assessment, both teachers created a way to have an active part in breaking down this classic piece of literature.

Eight tables were set up in the media center for exhibits A-H. Students had to visit each table in five-minute intervals to review each exhibit, discuss it with others in the class and, as FBI agents, file a report by answering question for the evidence presented.

Within the next few weeks, students will then prepare for a court hearing on this “murder.” Students will role-play as attorneys, witnesses and experts then present before the “judge,” Ms. Galloway, dressed in a toga, their cases. A jury of assigned students will decide the verdict.

Josh Outlaw, enthusiastically admitted to Mrs. Widell, “I can’t wait to read the book now that we’ve done all this research!” Another student was overheard saying, “This was so much better than working on the computer!”
